Library : Eighth grade
Author Robert Fanney will be visiting with 8th grade students on Tuesday, December 1.

Copies of his book will be on sale for $12 each.

Eighth Grade Library Reading Program

8th grade students will participate in several different reading activities throughout the year with prizes offered by the library.

For the first part of the year eighth grade students will be expected to read and report on three different books using the Triple Play card which is pictured below.

Students may select any book at all (except for the ones listed on the information sheet that will be given to all 8th graders when they visit the library - this sheet is also under "files" below) as long as it fits into one of these categories and it follows the path you have decided to take.  The book does not have to be in the Shirley Heim library.  Once you have read a book you will receive credit for reading by completing a book chat with Mrs. Ashby.  Here is how a book chat will work:

  1. Bring a copy of your book with you to the library.
  2. Sit in the chair next to Mrs. Ashby’s desk.
  3. Mrs. Ashby will open the book at random and choose a paragraph for you to read aloud.
  4. You will read that paragraph aloud and then tell Mrs. Ashby what is happening at that section of the book.
  5. That’s it!

As long as you have read the book, you will not have any problem “passing” the book chat.

Book One:  ALL 8th grade students will read a fantasy book first in order to prepare for a visit from a fantasy author on December 1.  The report on the fantasy book is due on or before October 30.

Book Two:  For the second book chat you may choose from any of the genres in the second column.  The second book chat is due on or before November 24.

Book Three:  Your third book genre will come from the third column but you must choose from the two genres indicated by your second block.  For example, if you read and reported on a science fiction book for your second title then your third book can ONLY be either a realistic or historical fiction book.  The third book chat is due on or before December 22.

If you are not sure of the genre of your book please come see Mrs. Ashby BEFORE you read it to be sure it will meet the requirements of the Triple Play card.

Do not wait until the due date to come for a book chat!  If you wait until the last day and Mrs. Ashby doesn’t have time to complete the chat then you will miss your deadline which will affect your Language Arts grade.
